Preheating and Surface Preparation

Preheating:
Pipe preheating takes place as pipe travels through the center of an in-line gas-fired furnace. The purpose here is to raise the temperature of the pipe to avoid damage during the coating process. Preheating is also used to remove wetness from the pipe prior to the final abrasive cleaning.

Surface Preparation:
Two units called "Wheelabrators" create a "near white" Nace #2 surface cleanness. Each wheelabrator has two 100 horsepower cleaning wheels in which a combination of S-330 shot, GL-18, GL-25 and GH-18 grit are used to create a surface profile of 2 to 4 mils. The surface profile creates a substrate to which a coating can mechanically adhere. The created profile is then measured with Textex Press-O-Film replication tape and a dial micrometer. Samples of the abrasive are tested daily for sieve/particle size analysis, conductivity and contamination by ferrosalts.
